A letter to the editor titled “Nothing nicer than warmth of a fire” contains many ideas that need response.
Firstly, the claim that “It was a breath of fresh air to read that others support burning” is a strange use of words for our situation. I think that the air quality of Prince George is a serious issue and fresh air would improve if burning stopped.
Secondly, “Letters supporting burning are timely and reflect common sense” is what I would consider LACK of common sense. In my common sense, burning wood has no place within Prince George city limits.
Thirdly, “You can add our family into others that appear adamant to keep up their long-standing family tradition of burning” is a defiant intent to damage the air quality and health of our city.
Also, “Fully approved heaters, use of dry wood, 85% efficiency, only a small plume, heat during a power outage, satisfying visual experience, cozy, good compost” are nice-sounding pros that have many convincing arguments against.
Also, “The anti-burners should conduct surveys” is a technique used by all polluters to diffuse the issue. Those responsible for smoke should have to do the surveys and I am sure that they will lose as did the cigarette industry.
Also, “Wood burning is negligible” is plainly wrong to many neighbours who suffer breathing problems.
Also, “Go after the real culprits” is an attempt to pass the blame. We should all be trying to improve air quality. The mills will improve when citizens improve.
Finally, “Stop barking up the wrong chimney” is a challenge to which I would respond “Health is nicer than the warmth of a fire”. There is a saying, ”Those who have health have hope and those who have hope have everything.”
