PGAQ #45 by Vic Steblin, Nov 16, 2008 2570 Laurier Crescent, Prince George, BC, 250-564-1123
Some recent research on air quality in Prince George presented easily remembered numbers. The numbers referred to the sources of fine-particulate in our air-shed. The sources are 25% from industry, 25% from transportation, 25% wood-burning and 25% dust and natural sources. Of course there is overlap and uncertainty and much opportunity for opinion and blame.
For example, how much of the levoglucosan signature from burning wood comes from residences? If the high heat of efficient burning destroys most of the levoglucosan then is it coming from the smell of the lumber itself? Does most of the diesel particulate come from heavy trucks or locomotives?
Should it actually matter that much as to the source of particles? Prince George has a particulate problem and we should all be involved in the solutions. The bottom line is to reduce particulate.
Industry must use the best available technology. Transportation must reduce particulate through alternative routes and types, and more efficient usage like reduced idling. Wood-burning by residents must be totally banned in city limits. Wiser techniques of sanding roads and street sweeping are always welcome.
Improvement must come from many sources. More of us need to show concern and not just move out when the going gets tough.
