A wonderful tradition, the fireworks show, on New Years, Canada Day or Halloween. Who would ever suggest stopping such a thrilling display of sight, sound and smell? One can feel the vibrations of a spectacular blast and sometimes even smell and taste the air. Caution may be urged for upward-gazing eyes directly underneath the fallout but crowds and their children will gather from all directions.
Air quality concerns are minimal because fireworks are popular, tolerated, and most important, happen only once in a while. Any slight breeze wafts away the smoke trails and puffs but not before they highlight the colours and flashes.
Excitement for humans usually comes at some risk. Extreme sports come with risks and we should only participate after learning about those risks. Jobs also come with risks. Living in Prince George comes with risks.
We must tolerate very poor air quality for the sake of jobs. Maybe the jobs should change. Maybe the location of the mills should change. Maybe our attitudes should change. Our air quality must improve. It starts with more people caring and complaining.
