Those who are involved with any issue have usually been affected by that issue. Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) or Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) members have usually lost family members in these situations and thus want to help others avoid similar tragedies.
I am against wood burning because I am surrounded by wood smoke in the bowl area of Prince George and believe that I have a right to clean air.
Any issue may be selfish because those involved care most about their immediate surroundings. Most do not know or care that much about distant concerns. This makes sense and seems obvious but can also seem selfish.
Consider global warming. I tend not to care that much about wood smoke causing global warming. The effect of smoke particles on health is my primary concern. I am also only slightly concerned about China’s pollution because it is so far away. I care more about my neighbour’s wood smoke since it affects me directly.
It makes sense that people get involved over local issues. I try to reduce the wood smoke in my area by writing letters. Maybe more will start burning wood because of the letters but I hope not.
